Dictionary
Here are some expressions used by divers and some Maldivian names used to describe underwater landscapes:
Atm: Atmosphere. Used to measure pressure. At sea level is the air pressure 1 atm. Bar: Unit to measure pressure. 1 bar is almost equal to 1 atm. BCD: Buoyancy Control Device - a vest that is attached to the air tank and secures hoses and accessories. It is equipped with an air bladder that is used to control the diver's buoyancy. Beyru: Outer reef. Buddy: The diver you are assigned to dive together with. The buddies will stay close together during the entire dive and assist each other if necessary. Narcosis: Narcotic effect caused by too high partial pressure of nitrogen in the body. Nitrox: Oxygen enriched air. Breathing air where the oxygen content is higher than 21 %. Thila: A small mountain top under the surface of the sea. |
